Hello my beautiful curly friends!
I am so excited to discuss an accessory I love but don’t always get to wear which are hats! Hats are such a fun statement piece and add personality to your outfit; however, due to natural hair volume they don’t always get a lot of action. This blog will outline four hairstyles that are great for creating stylish looks and I’ll share tips on how to make them work with your hair density. Before we get started, let’s take some time to identify your hat style preference and what challenges you face when wearing them as a natural. If you’re like me, you like the hipster fedora look or beanie. Before watching this video, I decided that having healthy hair was worth the sacrifice of not wearing hats but trust and believe there are times when I’m dyyyyinnnggg to wear one! I tend to have a causal style so beanie’s are my go-to hat of choice. Watching this video has helped me learn tricks that I could use to style my hair in a way that will not damage it and also allow me to wear the looks I love.
1. Keziah creates this first look wearing a fedora with bangs styled in a pompadour. You don’t see the pompadour as much anymore, but I was happy to see her bring it back. I’ve learned that wearing a hat with natural hair is all about having fun with your bangs. Feel free to play around with different styles that compliment your hair length and the type of hat you’re wearing. She chose to wear her fedora toward the back of her head for positioning which means the hair has to go into a low bun. Our snappee scrunchies and snappee hair ties shape the bun and the hair tie helps secure it in place. This was my favorite tip of the whole video! If you have difficulty securing your hat, use the bobby pin trick. Take the bobby pin and slide it through the inner lining of the hat and pin it into your hair. If your hat doesn’t have an inner lining you can always sew fabric in there as an option, which I did not know.
2. This second style is a front twist with a felt hat. I love this hat and I especially love how you can see the beautiful spiral pattern of the twist peeking in front. I never realized how gorgeous this style is! Seeing this look changed my opinion on how to view hats as an accessory. This style is just as beautiful as when you’re wearing straight hair and if we can be honest, we as naturals want to change society’s perception on what is attractive. Having healthy thick hair is just as desirable as any other length or texture.
3. We call style number three a side swoop bang with a felt hat. The side swoop is great because curly girls have plenty of hair to intensify the drama around the eyes. It’s so simple and the perfect touch to pull off this look. To achieve this style, you can use the same amount of hair as the previous styles or you can pull more hair out for a fuller bang. Once again, you’re going to use your bobby pins and pin your hair back, and the hair does not have to be perfect. For this look Keziah set her bun in a medium low position and pushed the access hair up into the hat. We recommend using our snappee hair scrunchie and snappee hair ties as styling tools for all looks.
4. Style number four is such a fun one. When I saw this hat, I had two thoughts. One, this is such a “derby” look. Like the hats wealthy women wear when they attend horse racing competitions. Two, this is definitely a classy feminine look. With summer right around the corner this is a great summer hat if you’re a classic beauty at heart. To create the bangs, we recommend re-moisturizing your hair with a little water to regain its fluffiness. If you have really long bangs, a trick I use to get them out of my eyes, is to bobby pin them back. This method is great so that you don’t have to cut your bangs every time they get to long. Play around with how you want to style the ponytail, you can leave the hair out, or in a bun, either is stunning.
When it comes to wearing hats with natural hair, we recommend doing it on stretched hair. This allows you to create a variety of looks and get your hair flatter so that the hat sits on your head nicely.
