Curl definition is something all curly hair naturals try to achieve and to some it comes easier.
Curl definition is not hard to achieve if you use the right methods and techniques. Some techniques cater to certain hair types, but the SwirlyCurly Wash N' Dry Method is for all curly naturals no matter the hair type, texture, density, length, or porosity.
It may take some practice, but once you get it, you'll have the curl definition you always dreamed of. This post will help guide you along the way and teach you different techniques to define your curls and how the Wash N' Dry method can and will work for you!
Curl definition is exactly what is sounds like! It's the ability for your curls to pop no matter your hair texture and type. There are many ways that us curly girls can define our curls and you may be more familiar with some techniques vs. others.
Shingling
Shingling to define your natural hair is when you apply a product, such as our Mango Moringa Moisture Max Styling Cream, to each single curl. This method is great for all hair types, but can be extremely time consuming.
Attention to detail is really important when shingling and it can take upwards of 2 hours to define your curls via this method. It works, but who wouldn't want to cut their wash day down by trying other methods.
Finger coils
Finger coiling is another popular way that curly naturals define their curls. It is a little similiar to the shingling method being that it is very time consuming, but the curl definition can be achieved.
All you have to do is wrap your individual curls around your finger with product in it and the result is a nice bouncy curl. This method is done on wet hair, so you would have to take into consideration the drying time also.
Braid out
Braid outs are really popular and one of the main ways that curly naturals get the definition and stretched hair that they want. Braid outs are really cool because they can be achieved on wet or dry hair.
When you do a braid out on wet hair will have to take into consideration drying time, which is usually determined by your hair's porosity and density. On wet hair, your hair will be less stretched once the braids are taken out, but the definition will still be there!
On dry hair, curls are both defined and elongated. Some curly hair naturals don't like to use heat on their hair, but believe it or not, heat in moderation and on low settings can be the change your hair routine needs. Our CurlDefiner Natural Hair Dryer, is the perfect hair dryer for naturals who want to start to add heat to their routine, of course in moderation.
Flexi rods
Flexi rods are also a curly girl favorite because it can be achieved on both dry and wet hair. They come in different sizes so you are able to decide how big or small you want your curls to be. As with the braid out, if you do decide to use flexi rods on wet hair to achieve your curl definition, you have to take into account the drying time.
Wash and go's
Last, but surely not least, the wash and go! A lot of us curlies stay away from wash and go's because of different reasons. One of the BIG reasons is that when your curls are dripping wet, they look awesome, but do not look the same once dried.
Of course you would need a gel to hold, but your hair will shrink and be less defined with wash and go's if you do not lock in the moisture fully.
We have an alternative to the wash and go that will guarantee that your hair looks the same wet and dry and will save you a lot of time!
Drumrollll....
