Be Strong, say it Loud I’m Natural and I’m PROUD!
Hello, natural beauties! I am so excited for this week’s curl convo. We will be discussing how to build self-confidence wearing our naturally curly hair. This is such an important topic, although we are further along in our natural hair movement than ever, there’s still some hesitation when it comes to ethnic women embracing their natural hair and all its stages. If you’ve just done a big chop, welcome! For those that are a few years in the game, but missing that silky straight hair, hear us out! There is so much versatility in wearing your hair natural! If you’ve been questioning whether the natural journey is for you, in this blog, our CEO Keziah Dhamma will share tips that have helped her find confidence while venturing through the natural hair journey.
What drove you to go natural? Were you in desperate need of a change, desiring healthy hair again, working on loving yourself more? Whatever your reasoning, the pre and post action realities become very different than what we initially think it’s going to be. The truth is, we have no idea how this hair transformation is going to redefine our lives, or the way people respond to us. Wearing your natural hair is intimidating to some. Just know, you’re going to have people who love your natural hair and some who secretly question it. Either way, you look amazing and they wish they had the beautiful features you do.
To Keziah’s first point, your wardrobe may change depending on how your natural hair flows with your style. You know what they say, women love to switch up our hair, which includes switching up our “look.” In most cases this is true and embracing a different hair style may prompt you to do this on a more practical level. Along with that, building confidence in your natural hair may require you to find cute ways to spruce up your do! Don’t be afraid to buy bows, headbands, scarves. Whatever compliments your style and facial features! You’ll receive so many compliments, your confidence will sky rocket and you’ll start to realize that what you have is unique. Lastly, don’t obsess over tracking your hair growth. If you dedicate time toward learning about your natural hair, how it retains moisture, your porosity type, protective styling etc., you’ll eventually experience length retention.
Keziah stresses the importance of staying committed to your natural hair journey. Girrrrl, there will be days when you don’t feel like touching your hair and that is ok. Natural hair takes commitment and patience! I recommend protective styles that allow you to take a break from your regular hair routine. When I first started out in my natural hair journey, I realized I wasn’t giving my hair enough moisture. Moisture only comes from H20! So, if you don’t have time to wash your hair weekly, I recommend deep conditioning that off week or co-washing, whatever works for your hair, just to keep it hydrated. Hydration is what keeps our curls springy and coiled. Try different wash methods and see what works for you! Research how to trim your natural hair and how often. Figure out if your hair likes coconut oil or olive oil, maybe your hair doesn’t respond to oil at all! When you learn that winning combination, everyone will ask you how you achieve that look!
So, what do you do when nothing is working! No hairstyle is giving you life, instead it’s giving you frustration. That’s alright, hair is just like life, some days are better than others. The key is being open to trying new styles and as mentioned earlier, accessorizing. When my wash n go is old, my go to style is a big puff. If I don’t feel like wearing my hair out and untamed, I just throw it up! And there’s so many types of up do’s you can rock. Do research on that too! Don’t let the hair dictate you, you control the hair. Take those “off” days and make them poppin days!
