We have been told over and over again that heat is bad for our natural curls and that we should stay away from it as much as possible. Heat can in fact cause irreversible damage to our strands and can dry out our hair out if overdone.
There are several reasons why you may not incorporate heat into your wash day, but it might actually be the trick you never knew you needed!
In this post, you’ll understand how to add heat to your wash day routine to make your hair healthier without the damage.
Knowing and understanding that all heat for your natural curls is not bad is extremely important. As naturals, we can choose to use blow dryers, flat irons, and diffusers to help our hair in one way or another. Both blow dryers and flat irons can cause damage if we are not properly protecting our curls before the heat and if we are not using proper heating settings.
Blow Drying
A lot of curly naturals experience blow drying of some sort if you choose to get your hair professionally done in a salon. These blow dryers that our stylist use usually are extremely high heat and even burn when our hair is being blow dried.
Because of this, you might find yourself looking for similar hair dryers when you go to buy one yourself, but because you are not a professional, you most likely would damage your hair on those high heat settings.
Hair dryers like our new CurlDefiner Natural Hair Dryer are perfect because it's low heat and made just for naturals to help define your curls and reduce unwanted frizz.
Vs. Flat Iron
Flat ironing your hair is using 2 hot plates on very high heat to straighten your strands. Your hair is taken from your naturally curly state to a straight state. It is recommended that you do not flat iron your hair at all and if you do, no more than 2 times a year.
The risk associated with using a flat iron is not worth the possible irreversible damage that can be done to your curls. If you absolutely have to use heat, the CurlDefiner Natural Hair Dryer is your best option.
How To Incorporate Heat Into Your Wash Day
So we have already told you that using a hair dryer can be beneficial for your wash day and our Wash N' Dry method is the perfect method to help you get it incorporated.
The Wash N' Dry method is similar to your traditional wash and go, but better in a lot of ways.
The first step is to section your clean, washed hair into twists or section sizes of your choice. This will allow you to work section by section for better definition and hydration.
Start to untwist one section at a time and apply our Mango Moringa Moisture Max Styling Cream and then our Mango Moringa Moisture Max Gel. Be sure to re-wet the strand if it did get dry so that the product is applied on wet strands. Go from root to ends.
This step is completely optional, but you can put your hair in little buns in order to make it easier when blow drying in the next step. The little buns create larger sections, but you can keep your hair in the twist and take out a few at a time.
The last step is to use our CurlDefiner Natural Hair Dryer to blow dry each section of your hair from root to ends. This will dry and define your curls in 30 minutes or less, add volume, stretch your hair, reduce breakage, and minimize frizz!
